Seracco delle Grandes Jorasses sorvegliato speciale

7 octobre 2011

Fondazione Montagna sicura has been monitoring the Grandes Jorasses serac, sited at 4100 m above a
populated area. In order to monitor the movements it is needed a real time and continuous system. The
current monitoring system consists of poles with prisms placed on the surface of the serac monitored
by an automatic total station (motorized total station) sited in the valley floor. In the frame work of the
european project GlaRiskAlp Fondazione Montagna sicura is testing alternative monitoring systems in order
to acquire a better understanding of the serac. The first one is based on a wireless network of a single
frequency GPS receivers installed on the serac. A complementary observations are given by an automatic
seismograph that records the seismic activity of the serac and transmits via GPRS. A visual interpretation
of the evolution is given by an automatic high resolution photo camera that acquire periodic pictures and
send it to the central server.

The GPS wireless network was developed with the Politecnico di Torino and presented at IEEE Antennas
and Propagation in Wireless Communications conference (APWC) 2011:
